A building of this quality in terms of space, design and materials has never been seen in Thornton Heath, at least in modern times.

You need to go inside to appreciate it. And its not easy to photograph as it is about how the spaces all fit together and how the old features are integrated into the new concept. This building sets a high standard for any new building in Thornton Heath to aspire to.

I can't rave too much about this! Its like a prestige building but for the ordinary library users of Thornton Heath.

OK one word of criticism the childrens library which has returned to the ground floor after many years has the most amazing carpet but needs more sound dampening. I was there with just a few 2 year olds and it was deafening. How about a tapestry project or something?

In fact that is what is needed over all - some projects, readings, and performances to bring the communities oral culture in to meet the literary heritage that the library has at its core. <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/57976131@N00/4742815423/in/set-72157600393876443/">view&nbsp;on&nbsp;flickr&raquo;</a>" rel="lightbox[d2e8a53727c4f640bce3cc67d767928f]" ><a href="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2300/2218173595_833d717296.jpg" class="flickr" title="I had suggested people could 'compose' their own panels.

I designed a 'house' that could be made by everyone in the Orchestra. Made in panels using old doors, joists and floor boards from demolition sites, nailed together.

Art was considered rubbish. So we had real rubbish and art for sale... I think it was Tim Mitchell who had the idea of the Refuse Collection

ART SPECTRUM London was a big show at Ally Pally with all the 'best' artists of the day. There was David Hockney, a nice installation by Marc Chamowicz etc. So it was a bit of an affront to aesthetics.

This photo print had a rough mask of old tracing paper over the top background.

The references for me are 1. The Plotland vernacular of the UK contemporary slides of which can be found on my Flickr archive. Theorised on:
<a href="http://www.stefan-szczelkun.org.uk/taste/Chapter5-Clough" rel="nofollow">www.stefan-szczelkun.org.uk/taste/Chapter5-Clough</a> Williams-E.html
2. Getting all those classical musicians and composers actual banging in nails and buidling something. A kind of class engagement with physical production and its aesthetics.
3. Related also the the urban situation in which many old houses were crudely rehabilitated and perfectly good doors where constantly thrown away - often being used to fence building sites.

Scratch members entered into it in two ways. Cornelius believed it was a task to be completed, not a sculptural opportunity, whereas Peter Ellison and a smaller gang used the framework of old joists (4x2) to hold together a more sculptural arrangement.
These were mainly to be seen around the back! See other photo in this set...

Later in the 1990s I was member of a self-build group and actually built my own house in Kennington (completed 1996). During this time, at the '25 Years from Scratch' event at the ICA in 1994 London, I set up an improvisation using building tools and materials. I think it was called 'Self-Build' There is a recording of this somewhere...
